HMC is only hospital in Cameron County to receive “A” grade from the Leapfrog Group; top grades show consistency in providing high levels of care for Valley patients
Harlingen, TX, May 2026 – Harlingen Medical Center has received its 10th straight “A” Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, for the spring of 2026. This national distinction recognizes Harlingen Medical as being among the top hospitals in the nation in protecting patients from preventable harm and errors.
The latest award means that Harlingen Medical Center (HMC) has received “straight A’s” for patient safety for five years in a row – from 2021 to 2026. This demonstrates HMC’s commitment to consistently deliver the best care possible to patients of the Rio Grande Valley.
Harlingen Medical Center, a member of the Prime Healthcare, is the only hospital in Cameron County to receive the “A” grade for patient safety for the spring of 2026 – and the only hospital in Cameron County which has consistently received the “A” grade over the past five years.

The Leapfrog Group, a non-profit, independent national organization, assigns a grade of “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” to general hospitals across the country – using evidence-based measures of patient safety which are focused on preventing errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries, which kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. The Leapfrog program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
